Floating Wetland Deployment Locations

Since 2021, the Emerald Tutu has deployed floating wetland prototypes in various locations in Boston Harbor, the nearby towns of Lynn and Quincy, as well as farther afield in Connecticut and on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Our prototypes have been exposed to different oceanic, weather, and wind environments, and we have learned to balance prefabrication and site work with deployment sites both close to home and farther afield.

Obtaining permits to deploy prototypes on the waterfront can be a challenging process, but building relationships with community members, local politicians, and other waterfront stakeholders always helps in securing permissions for coastal research work. See the Notes on Permitting section for more details.

Lynn Harbor

Anchored in a nearshore area of Lynn Harbor, 1000ft East of the mouth of the Saugus River. Exposed to significant waves and weather from the harbor mouth at Southeast.

Piers Park Waterfront

The “Floating Frame,” our permitted nearshore floating structure that can hold up to 10 units, visible from shore at the East side of Piers Park. Exposed to moderate Boston inner harbor waves and weather.

Boston Shipyard Graving Dock

Non-functional historic dry dock in East Boston. Blocked from wind and wave energy from all sides, but subject to Boston harbor tidal flow.

Neponset River

Anchored in a nearshore area at the mouth of the Neponset River. Exposed to strong tidal currents and minimal waves and weather.

Mason’s Island

Anchored in a nearshore area 50 ft from a decaying natural marsh. Exposed to significant waves and weather.

Landmark School & Sound School

Anchored in a nearshore area 100 ft from a rocky bluff. Exposed to significant open ocean waves and weather.
